This Sure Uncertainty by Heather Couch Union University Gallery of Art Jackson, Tennessee October 12 - November 13, 2015 Artist Statement
Marks of the hand repeat on structures that threaten not to stand, as mass and line hover with casual balance. Exploiting the fragile and sensitive nature of the ceramic material allows investigation into the aesthetics of uncertainty. Questioning the constructions we depend on is an unsettling and potentially damaging activity. And yet there is a warmth to the color, an intimacy in line quality, a softness in scattered clumps. I stand still precariously, or precariously still.
Using the language of abstraction allows me creative freedom, as I waver between working from and working to. The work stems from personal narratives, but I intentionally make decisions that are intuitive and experimental, leading to compositions that are rhythmically loose and playfully awkward. The feeling of moving through is more important than arriving, and process is here given the pedestal.
